Bay Association NCNC-UCC
2002: A Year of Prayer for New & Renewing Churches

wheatfield.jpg (60838 bytes)

Then Jesus made a circuit of all the towns and villages. He taught in their meeting places, reported kingdom news, and healed their diseased bodies, healed their bruised and hurt lives. When he looked out over the crowds, his heart broke. So confused and aimless they were, like sheep with no shepherd. "What a huge harvest!" he said to his disciples. "How few workers! On your knees and pray for harvest hands!"

The prayer was no sooner prayed than it was answered. Jesus called twelve of his followers and sent them into the ripe fields. He gave them power to kick out evil spirits, and to tenderly care for the bruised and hurt lives...

Jesus sent his twelve harvest hands out with this charge:

"Don't begin by traveling to some far-off place to convert unbelievers. And don't try to be dramatic by tackling some public enemy. Go to the lost, confused people right here in the neighborhood. Tell them that the kingdom is here. Bring health to the sick. Raise the dead. Touch the untouchables. Kick out the demons. You have been treated generously, so live generously.

"Don't think you have to put on a fund-raising campaign before you start. You don't need a lot of equipment. YOU are the equipment, and all you need to keep that going is three meals a day. Travel light."

Motivating and encouraging God,
We gather in your name as communities of faith.
We struggle to discern your will so as to bring your dominion to this earth.
We thank you for the love and care that come to pass when we gather together.
We thank you that spiritual growth is a forever possibility.

We thank you for the power of the Spirit that surrounds and empowers us
as followers of your son, Jesus.
However, O God, sometimes we become disheartened.
Our congregations get into a holding pattern.
We do what we have always done and it does not meet the needs of these days.
We do not have the energy or enthusiasm to effect what is required.
We seem not to have imagination or inventiveness enough to enliven our congregations.

Forgive us when we get discouraged.
Forgive us when we get lazy and indifferent.
Forgive us when our faith is insufficient.

Inspire us to appreciate, O God, that in the past can be found
strong and reliable stepping stones to a vibrant and purposeful future.

Help us to discern:

that which is worthy to be continued;
that which has potential to be revitalized;
that which should be honored and released.

Grant us the wisdom and the courage for the living of these days,
the vision and the determination for the shaping of the future,
and the desire and will for the serving of thee whom we adore.

Thanks be to thee, O God, our strength and our redeemer. Amen.

Gracious God, we bring before you in prayer the Suisun-Fairfield Congregational Church. Guide, comfort and sustain the members of this, our sister congregation in Christ. Grant to their pastor and leaders wisdom, compassion and vision; to their sick and fearful grant courage and comfort. Nurture their young in faith and their old in joy. Into their neighborhood and community bring justice, mercy and fresh hope.

On behalf of the Suisun-Fairfield Congregational Church we give you special thanks for your presence within their midst! Bless, heal and sanctify the story and the memories of this congregation. And as they continue their journey of faith, we lift special prayers for each one of their members who are living with heavy hearts due to illness, grief, worry or fear. May your Grace descend and bring peace.

We especially invite the presence of your Holy Spirit into the hearts and the worship of this congregation that they might be always led to proclaim and live Jesus' two great commandments in the world, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.‘ This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’

We ask all this in faith and in the sure confidence that our sisters and brothers of this congregation rest secure in your loving and everlasting arms, now and forever.

Amen.

Precious Lord, our Creator…we hold up before you the ALAMEDA ORIGINAL FOUNDERS SAMOAN UCC congregation. Our sisters and brothers in this congregation are pilgrims looking for a place of worship, a place where they will feel centered, a place where they can feel the Holy Spirit working in their midst, whether it is on a Sunday or a Wednesday or a Saturday. Yes Lord, they need a Sanctuary building to call their own; one that is on level ground, so all can worship there whether they have limited mobility or are senior members.

On behalf of this church, we are thankful for their ministry in this very central area for them (their congregants come from Fairfield and Hayward and places in between.) We ask that you grant the sisters and brothers and leaders wisdom and compassion as they nurture their small congregation. We also ask your blessings on Pastor Pisa Tuitusa of The Alameda Original Founders Samoan UCC congregation; please fill him with the Holy Spirit as he shepherds his congregation.

We know Dear Lord that each of these members have stories to tell to their families and to their church members and to their community…help keep those stories of pilgrimages alive. Their faith journey is ongoing and powerful.

Place your loving arms around Gertrude King, the congregation's often times spokesperson, filling her with healing of body and granting her continued energy to carry out your work in your Kin Dom.

Thank you for walking with this congregation and surrounding them with joy, courage, love and compassion.

We ask these things in the name of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.

AMEN

Prayer for UCC Church Start in Richmond

Our God, creator and guiding spirit of us all, we bring before you in prayer the city of Richmond, which does not have a UCC church within its boundaries. Richmond is a city with great needs and great possibilities. Under Mayor Irma Anderson, the city is trying to free itself from the oppressive weight of murder, gangs, drugs, and all the other ills that are the plague of poverty and ignorance.

To help the city to be reborn a new spirit is needed. Let thy Spirit come into our midst, Our God, and bring together those who could make a difference for Richmond by forming a new UCC congregation there.

Prayer for El Sobrante, Hercules, Rodeo, Pinole and San Pablo

Calling God, we pray for the people who live in El Sobrante, Hercules, Rodeo, Pinole and San Pablo. Although they are surrounded by the beauty of the changing hills and the windy ever-presence of the bay, we know that for many their lives are defined by the freeway: strip malls, fast food restaurants, and the noise and fumes of traffic and long commutes. Railroad tracks and oil refineries are seldom out of sight. Economic anxiety is seldom out of mind.

Ringed about by retail stores, they have endless opportunities to buy fast food and material things yet many hunger and thirst for loving human community and for connection with you, the very source of their being. Within the walls of their houses, condos and apartments, some experience bruised and broken lives. Some hunger and thirst for righteousness and for the blessings of inclusive community for which we ourselves also yearn. There are some there who will welcome your loving and liberating Word as we seek to speak it.

Bestow upon us your Holy Spirit that we may, if it is your will, help to call forth Christ’s community in El Sobrante, Hercules, Rodeo, Pinole and San Pablo.

Please let it be so.

Easter Prayer for Brentwood

Creator God, we give you thanks for the beautiful fruit trees in Brentwood that have provided delicious sustenance for so many of us in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Bless those who planted and nurtured them. Now, many of those acres of trees have become affordable housing for families. The parents are commuting to San Francisco -- long, long hours away from their children. Child care needs are tremendous. The rapid growth of the area finds school attendance outpacing the facilities.

May your Spirit touch their busy lives and help them build healthy relationships: parents, children and communities.

May they someday become like the trees, which are "planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper."

In Christ's name we pray.

Amen.

Dear Lord our God:

We come before You in prayer to give thanks for the many blessings You bestow upon us each and every day.

We also wish to give thanks to You for watching over our sisters and brothers in the New Fellowship United Church of Christ in Berkeley. They are so happy with their multicultural and diversified community. Their dynamics change as their community changes but with Your help they keep growing each day. Their happiness of being together increases daily.

We also pray that You will help to lead them to a new meeting place this coming year since they will be losing their current one in a few months. This is a constant source of concern for them at this time.

And, lastly, we pray that You will send the Holy Spirit to help them find a "minister in training" or Seminary student in the coming year to enliven and renew their church and its members.

We ask these things in Jesus name.

Amen

April 21, 2002 (Good Shepherd Sunday)

You are our Good Shepherd. We know your voice.
Dancing ahead of us, you beckon us into the future.
You bring us comfort when we are aching.

You shelter us from the storms that swirl around us.
The earth may shudder beneath our feet,
The seas may pour over the land,
Mountains may erupt in flames or disintegrate into dust,
And still your arms will shield us. You will bind up our wounds.

We thank you for your presence today and your faithfulness in the past.

Too often we have wandered,
Intent on our own explorations, our own adventures,
Forgetting that the church is your body, not a mortal society.
Remind us, we pray, that you are not seeking to limit us or bind us,
Rather you know us so well that you understand where we will find our truest joy.

You lead us into verdant pastures, hillsides green with promise.
Keep us attuned to your voice.
On the most treacherous of paths, you guide us in safety,
Showing us the chasms of despair, the barren vistas of poverty

Where we will labor, transforming them into valleys of blessings
and promontories of hope for all your beloved flock.
Even as we pass through death’s bleak landscape, we need not fear,
For you have been there before us. You know the way,
Through death
Into new life.

Anoint us, we pray, with the oil of courage and the balm of faithfulness,
That your church may be renewed.

Amen.

Le Atua, we bring before you our prayers for our sister congregation Fua Ole Sinapi UCC in Union City. We are so happy for this new church where some of our Samoan sisters and brothers can worship you together. We pray for Pastor Faiva Sa'aga and for all the members of the congregation.

We praise you and give you great thanks for all the care and blessings with which you surround Fua Ole Sinapi. We are so grateful for the care and support they, an In-Care congregation, have experienced! We join them in giving thanks for the blessings of financial support in the form of a leadership subsidy grant, and also for the spiritual and personal support they have felt from the Local Church Ministries staff in Cleveland and from our NCNC-UCC Conference Minister and Associate Conference Minister, who are always available to respond to problems or questions.

We pray that the rest of us may also open our hearts, hands, eyes and ears to the many gifts which this young congregation brings to us within the Bay Association. Lead us into genuine fellowship with them!

We pray that the members, friends and supporters of this congregation may be blessed with a call to stewardship and giving that they may arrive at a place of financial self-support, and even more -- a place of mission giving beyond self-support!

We ask the presence of your Holy Spirit so that the members of Fua Ole Sinapi may experience spiritual growth on their individual journeys and in their journey as a church. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ!

Eternal God, we offer thanksgiving and praise to you for the (here name your own local church). We give you thanks for those who responded to your call to establish this church.

We acknowledge our gratitude for the continuing ministry and mission of our church through the years. We thank you for all that our church has meant to its members, to those its ministry has touched, and to the United Church of Christ.

In tender memory we rejoice at the inspiration which has been found here, through the preaching of your Word, through the singing of hymns to your praise, and through the sharing of life-sustaining sacraments.

Look upon us this day with mercy. Bless us as we reconsecrate ourselves to you. Sanctify our lives and our work through this church. Help us to preserve the best of our past and to be open to new vision.

May this local church long continue to be a sign of your Spirit and a witness to Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray.

Come, Holy Spirit, come!

Break down any barriers of culture, language and tradition that separate our churches from one another. May each of us hear the others speaking in the native language of each! Samoans, African Americans, foreign-born Chinese and American-born Chinese, European-Americans of many different backgrounds, Japanese-speaking Americans and English-speaking Americans of Japanese descent, women and men and children of mixed race and rich ethnic heritage, sons and daughters and grandchildren of the Philippine Islands who speak Pilipino, Cebuano, Bisaya, Ilokano and English, and also our Spanish-speaking neighbors -- in our own languages and cultures and traditions let us hear -- really hear -- one another speaking about God's deeds of power! May our understanding and communication be such that our neighbors, friends and co-workers will be amazed and perplexed!

Blow, Wind, blow!

Blow through the cracks and corners and crevices of our congregations and church buildings, sweeping up and blowing away all that is tattered and useless, all that clutters our visions of renewal and new life, all that separates and divides, all that clutters our sight of the Risen Christ out ahead of us, all that plugs our ears against hearing His call to follow, follow still. Blow away our reluctance to change, blow away our clinging dependence on money, blow away our survival fears and control wars. If we live, we live to Christ! And if we die, we die to Christ!

Burn, Fire, burn!

May our faith burn in our mouths until we speak it, may our hope burn in our souls until we catch fire for love and justice, for community and peace. May love burn away the fear and resentment that produce fruitless conflict in our churches. May righteous anger burn in our churches until justice is done in our communities and in our world. Renew our churches, we pray, and give us the Holy Spirit power to gather new church communities where now there are none. Amen, and amen!

Prayer for New Church Starts:

God of the sower and the reaper, you call us as individuals and as congregations of the United Church of Christ to share with communities near and far the good news of the Gospel. As we celebrate the ministries of all our Association churches, we recognize those fallow fields that are still ripe for planting. You have given us the seeds of your inclusive love, the water of mercy and compassion, the tools of justice and peace. Now send us forth into those fields to work the soil, to plant the seeds, to water, cultivate and care for the tender shoots of new beginnings in expectation of an abundant harvest.

Help us to recognize the importance of this undertaking, to dedicate ourselves to the tasks involved in growing new churches, and to develop and encourage the pastoral and lay leadership necessary for this exciting and challenging work. Keep our commitments before us and when we tire, lift up our hearts once again with the vision of new congregations of faithful people eager and willing to be disciples of Jesus.

We pray in the name of the One who is our Savior, our Guide, and our Friend. Amen.
