April @ Amistad
04/01/2011

Greetings Amistad!

Here's the tentative schedule for April.  Watch the website for changes and revisions.

Friday, April 1:  We continue our Lenten series on "Wild Jesus" by considering Bro. Paul's words to the church at Corinth, "We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored!" (I Cor. 4:10, NIV) Or as Eugene Peterson translates the passage, "We're the Messiah's misfits."   That's us, folks...

Friday, April 8:  Wild Jesus #3 -- Eating with disreputable people.  When the scholars of the Jesus Seminar first started examining the gospels verse-by-verse with an eye to finding the "real, historical Jesus" as opposed to the theological narrative about an expected Messiah, they agreed on one thing:  this guy Jesus -- the real dude, way back then -- must have made a practice of eating with disreputable people like prostitutes, tax collectors and other assorted sinners and outcasts.  It's reported in each of the 4 gospels and basically identifies the ministry of Jesus.

Friday, April 15:  Wild Jesus #4 -- Overturning the tables in the temple.  This guy was a genuine, no-holds-barred troublemaker!  We'll watch the memorable scene from "Jesus of Montreal" where the actor Daniel (who is being molded in the image of the Jesus he portrays) breaks up the filming of a beer commercial abusive of women.  Way to go, Jesus!!

Friday, April 22 -- God's Friday:  we'll celebrate with our annual Earth Day "Eco-Seder".

Friday, April 29 -- We'll celebrate the ongoing Resurrection  with the theme, "On the (Emmaus) Road Again..."   We'll look together at Emmanuel Garibay's wonderful "Emmaus" painting -- the one that is taped to our dining room wall year 'round -- and consider just where and how we might encounter God-with-us here with us in 21st century Solano County.  If the weather looks good we'll get out of the house and go somewhere "on the road" to remember what it feels like. Any ideas?

And we'll celebrate Shalaun's 3rd Birthday!!!   Wow, can you believe it??

Special Mission Note for April:  We'll be sending our "Balikbayan Box" for the Bingtans' Cebu Rural Christian Ministry in the Philippines just after Easter, so we need everything that's going into it by Friday April 22.  The school year there begins in June, so hopefully our gifts of children's backpacks and school supplies will arrive in plenty of time for the new group of Scholars.  And after Erlina Bingtan sits them down to write their "thank you notes" we'll hear from them sometime this summer.  May God bless and keep the students and their families!

Hope to see you all on Friday.

blessings and hope to all --

 Marian
