Amistad has Freedom
in its DNA!
-
Our name is
Amistad! Why? Because it is Spanish for friendship!
And because it speaks of freedom, recalling the Amistad incident of
1839-41
which is a part of our peace and justice heritage in the United Church of
Christ.
-
We have always
loved to sing "Amazing Grace" -- a song
celebrating transformation and freedom from slavery and slaving.
-
We celebrate the
wonderful painting "Call for Freedom"
by Haitian artist Mr. Patrice Piard who wrote to us via email:
"Concerning
CALL FOR FREEDOM, there is a big statue in Port-au-Prince,
just in front of the collapsed palace, called NEG MARRON INCONNU
who was made in the 60's to honor the revolted unknown slaves of Haiti.
From that statue, I implant some new elements, a new context,
in an effort to show or understand so many raisons why Haiti is so poor,
and also why so much love for Haiti ....my regards.......Bonne journee
Patrice Piard"
And so we feel God's
grief and rage when we learn that in our 21st century world
there are 27 million persons enslaved -- more than at any time in
history!
